With a London exhibition imminent, and a new book about to launch, we spoke to Shutter Hub member Sheila McKinney about Obsolete & Discontinued…
Three years ago, in March 2015, photographer and specialist photographic printer Mike Crawford was given a collection of old, out of date photographic papers. He decided the best thing to do was to give the paper away to see what other photographers and artists could do with it.
The various papers were distributed to over 60 participants, purposely with an open brief, so it was up to each photographer to consider how to use their selected material. Amongst these photographic artists were Shutter Hub members Daniel Berrange, Melanie King, Ky Lewis, Nicola Jayne Maskrey, Sheila McKinney and Tina Rowe. Over a period of months, prints were returned using a wide variety of processes including silver gelatin, lith printing, wet collodion, paper negative and several hybrid analogue/digital techniques.
So far Obsolete & Discontinued has been exhibited at the Revela-T festival of photography in Vilassar de Dalt, Spain, where it was launched in May 2016. It then went on to be exhibited at Schaelpic Photokunstbar in Cologne, Germany, in October 2016.
The exhibition is due to be shown next in London at Waterstones Bookshop Gallery, 82 Gower Street, WC1 in October 2018, which will coincide with the official launch of the book, which features a full portfolio of the project.
Further information on Obsolete & Discontinued can be found on the project website and Instagram.
