FORMAT PhotoForum at QUAD, Derby

The next meetings of FORMAT PhotoForum at QUAD in Derby have now been announced and are available to book. The following sessions are available:

EXPOSE YOURSELF!

Open Session at Photoforum

2nd December 2014, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, The Box, £5 (£4 for members/concessions)

We would like our Photoforum regulars and newcomers to share their photographs at this Open Session. The session will be led by photographer, author and teacher, Paul Hill, but these sessions are about you and your photographs. The work may provoke lively discussions about the issues the pictures raise. Who knows? But you will certainly have the opportunity to ‘expose yourself’ in front of an informed audience of fellow practitioners and enthusiasts, and get the sort of feedback that may help move the work forward, or even get it published or exhibited.

If you want to show your work (maximum 12 images – as files or prints – to give an opportunity for discussion), please contact Paul in advance at paul@hillonphotography.co.uk

FORMAT Photoforum: Laura Pannack

6 January, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, The Box, £5 (£4 for members/concessions)

Laura Pannack joins us for our first Photoforum session of the New Year. Laura is an award-winning photographer who focuses on social documentary and portraiture, and seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer.

A firm believer that “time, trust and understanding is the key to portraying subjects truthfully”, Laura’s approach allows genuine connections to be made between herself and those she photographs, and her projects often develop over several years. In this illustrated artist talk, Pannack will discuss her past and current projects, share her experiences and take part in a Q&A led by Photoforum host Paul Hill MBE.

Pannack recently achieved the John Kobal New Work Award from the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 (see image above) and her work has been extensively exhibited and published both in the UK and internationally.

FORMAT Photoforum: “DENCH Yourself”

3 February, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, The Box, £5 (£4 for members/concessions)

Join us for an unmissable edition of Photoforum with the award-winning photographer Peter Dench. The University of Derby graduate returns to the city to deliver a typically entertaining talk which offers an insight into his practice, advice on producing long-term reportage projects and on how to survive as a modern photographer.

Dench achieved a World Press Photo Award in the People in the News Stories category and participated in the World Press Joop Masterclass. His personal project 'England Uncensored' has been exhibited at the 2011 Visa pour l'Image Festival of Photojournalism in France and the Periscopio Festival, Spain. ‘England Uncensored’ was published in 2012. Dench’s new book ‘A&E’ was launched at the Photographers Gallery in November 2014. In 2010, Dench placed 2nd in Advertising at the Sony World Photography Awards.

Paul Hill MBE will lead a Q&A with Dench at the end of the session.

These sessions take place at QUAD, Market Place, Cathedral Quarter, Derby, DE1 3AS. You can find out more and book your place here.
