NIGHT MOODS is an online exhibition project celebrating the creative possibilities of image-making when the sun goes down.
Whether you’re interested in seemingly mundane street scenes or evocative nocturnal landscapes, prefer a spot of astrophotography or maybe just enjoy experimenting with light trails, NIGHT MOODS aims to showcase the range of photographic expression available at night.
The night can be an incredibly suggestive time, with the darkness useful for creating mystery or an unnerving atmosphere. Scenes we overlook during the day often take on a fascinating new appearance at night, or you may simply be inspired by the romance of the colours in the sky in the moments just after sunset to create something beautiful.
Whatever the case, we invite you to submit your images as we showcase the range of moods the night time has to offer through your amazing work!
Some image entries will be showcased on Instagram throughout the open call and afterwards, with all selected entries featured in the group exhibition on the Shutter Hub website.
Meeting Up and Creating Community
At Shutter Hub we’ve always been about supporting photographers and creating community wherever possible. We’ve often had to explore new ways of connecting, particularly during the pandemic, and we have missed being able to share in person events with like-minded photography lovers. As part of the NIGHT MOODS project we hope to bring that back.
If you wouldn’t consider the night time to be your usual photographic habitat, you’re invited to step outside of your comfort zone and give it a try at a Shutter Hub night photography meet-up! This will be an opportunity to try night photography in a welcoming group setting.
We’ll be publishing further details shortly so keep an eye out for more information (we’ll share it on the blog, in the newsletter, and on socials, so you’ll not miss it!)
Curating for the Community
NIGHT MOODS will be curated by Shutter Hub member Justin Carey, who has been a key member of our community since our inception in 2014, when he showed some of his night images in the first Shutter Hub OPEN exhibition. In 2015 Justin set up his 200+ member night photography group, Everything Interesting Happens At Night, in London, which we gladly supported. And then in 2016 he shared his passion for night photography with our audience in Cambridge during the Shutter Hub OPEN, delivering a talk about the history and practice of night photography.
Justin Carey is currently based in Birmingham, UK. He was the recipient of ReFramed bursary in 2020 to create work about the COVID-19 pandemic, the outcome of which was exhibited at FORMAT photography festival in 2021 and published in the book The Travelling World Is Not Arriving in the same year. His project Reaching Out Into The Dark, exploring urban solitude and loneliness, was shown at Studio1.1 gallery in London in 2018 in his first solo exhibition. He was shortlisted for the ArtGemini Prize in 2015. His photographic work has also been featured on the Photo Ethics Podcast and in The Week.
Justin will be producing this exhibition as part of our Curate for the Community project, which will see the production of a series of online exhibitions, curated by Shutter Hub members for the wider photographic community.
We’re making this opportunity affordable for all photographers, there are no set entry fees for NIGHT MOODS, we’re asking you to ‘pay what you can’. Please help support the work we do by sharing this opportunity with other photographers. We receive no external grants or funding, but we’re determined to do what we can to keep photography open to all.

HOW TO ENTER
Please read the specification information below. Files that do not meet the specification or are not labelled correctly may not be accepted.
Deadline for entries: 26 January 2023 (5pm UK time)
Please do not leave your entry until the last minute, we cannot accept any late entries.
FEES & ENTRY
There are no set entry fees for NIGHT MOODS, we’re asking you to ‘pay what you can’.
Once you’ve entered there are no further fees to take part – we’ll arrange, promote and deliver the online exhibition for you.
Each photographer can enter up to 6 images. Images can be from a series or individual images.
You don’t have to be a Shutter Hub member to take part, but if you would like to benefit from all the lovely stuff we offer, you can join here for just £87 per year.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR ENTRIES
All submitted files must be named with photographer’s name and title of work. Files that are not labelled correctly may not be accepted. Correct file naming looks like this: lastname_firstname_title_of_image.jpg
Images can be landscape or portrait format.
Submitted images must be jpegs, 2000 pixels wide, 300ppi and no more than 5MB in size. Please submit images in sRGB colour profile.
Images must not include visible watermarks.
Each photographer can submit up to 6 images.
Images must be suitable for a family audience.
Shutter Hub reserves the right to not display work.

Photographers retain copyright and ownership, as always.
We will let you know whether or not you have been selected within 28 days of the deadline. We always get in touch, so if for any reason you haven’t heard from us by this date, please email.
SALE OF WORK
Any enquiries from interested parties with regards to sales or commissions will be noted and passed directly to the photographers.
EXHIBITION TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Shutter Hub reserves the right to display, reproduce and publish in any media any entry, without payment, for the purpose of the project and its promotion and publicity. Copyright remains with the originator and each photographer shall be deemed to warrant that they own the entire copyright in the work or that they have permission from the licensee and/or copyright owner/s for the uses and that all necessary model releases and clearances have been obtained. If relevant, insurance of the artist’s work is the responsibility of the artist. Shutter Hub reserves the right to refuse work that they deem to be inappropriate, offensive, or explicit.
