It's nighttime and a hooded crow is standing on a cobblestone path in the pouring rain. The flash of vehicle headlights briefly illuminates the scene.

A pair of pigeons, deeply in love, are soaking in some late-afternoon sun. One is using their beak to gently nibble at their partners iridescent neck feathers which are sparkling in the light.

A close-up portrait of a heron who is patiently waiting at a fish market in Amsterdam.

A swallow has made a nice catch of multiple dragonflies and is headed to feed their nestlings

A baby chicken is nestled safely with their mother but has poked their head out from under her wing to look at the world. You can just make out the tooth they used to chip their way out of the egg.

A closup portrait of a young hooded crow who looks a mess going through their first molt. It's early morning in late august so there is a strong backlight and deep green trees behind them.

A flock of pigeons is at their favorite fountain at Alexanderplatz in Berlin. Here water trickles through blocks of stone so they can bathe and then climb up to dry off and preen all together.

A bee is flying past medicinal flowers on a mission to find pollen.

Many cities were founded in areas with incredible natural resources. Animals, initially driven out, are slowly finding ways to reintegrate and live alongside us. Birds, with their ability to fly and therefore navigate our streets and structures, are at the forefront. I take intimate portraits of them so that we might recognize them as individuals who are putting their lives on the line to develop inter-species culture and make our cities function as real ecosystems again.
