Niamh Swanton
Niamh Swanton is a performative photographer, based in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford.
She graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2019, where she gained a degree in Fine Art. Swanton’s work revolves around the human condition. She uses both performance and staged photography to explore the inner workings of one’s mind.
Creating tangible forms from the thoughts and emotions in question, Swanton uses herself as the main subject within the images as the work aids as a means of personal meditation. By obstructing her face, the images gain a sense of ambiguity. The viewer is no longer able to define an identity or a set narrative to an image.
Since graduating college Niamh Swanton has had publications in Source, Graduate Photography Showcase, Issue 098, Bloomers, OUT OF BODY, Issue 04 and Aesthetica, Future Now 2022 anthology, Abriged 0-94, Severin. Along with exhibitions such as Origins, Lismore Castle Arts, Waterford, Saturation, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork and Collateral Damage, Pyle Center, Wisconsin, People, places, Things & The Space in Between, Outset Gallery, Galway, and debuting her first solo show at The Black Box, Belfast. In 2023 seven of Swanton’s images had been acquired by Crawford Gallery for their national collection.
