Julie Derbyshire
Julie Derbyshire’s constructed images are the final distillation of her creative process, encompassing acts of fabrication, manipulation and disruption. Informed by the complexity and fragility of lived experience and inspired by art historical references, Derbyshire invites the viewer to reflect upon the fusion of beauty and disquiet that her work conveys. She approaches photography as an instrument of illusion, to beguile rather than document. By exploring the potential of the photographic object to conjure new meaning, she invites the viewer to question what lies beyond the image.
Derbyshire holds a BA Photography (1st Class) from the University of Westminster and an MA Photography (Distinction) from the London College of Communication (UAL). She has exhibited in the UK and abroad and her work is held in private collections. Derbyshire was a finalist in the Travers Smith Art Awards (2015) and the Arte Laguna Prize Venice (2016), and was awarded the Photofusion Prize (2017). She was nominated for the RPS 100 Heroines Awards. She lives and works in London.
