Ilaria Gioia

Born in 1987, Ilaria Gioia is an italian documentary photographer whose photographic research focuses on the representation of the unspoken aspects of femininity mostly linked to moments of deep change in a woman’s life such as the experience of childbirth, motherhood and aging.
Photography has always played a central role in her life as a tool capable of celebrating the fleeting beauty of everyday life, and whilst her early works focused on nature, becoming a mother profoundly reshaped her photographic research, leading her to focus on people and to use the photographic medium as a tool for self-healing and exploration of the emotional sphere.
In her works she usually starts from personal stories that can have a universality such as ‘I am here’ and Quale Madre’ the autobiographical work that tells of her inner journey to become a mother, her rebirth and her emotional experience during the early stages of motherhood, in a profound dialogue with herself and with a world still unknown.
Combining the intimate sphere with that of nature is a distinctive element of his visual signature.
