A portrait taken as part of a promotional poster campaign for The Improverts, one of the UKs longest running improvised comedy troupes.

A portrait of Willie Downie at home, seated in the "Country Music" corner of his living room. As a massive fan of all things Country and Western, this portrait is taken from a short series documenting the colourful people behind Glasgow's Grand Ol' Opry night club.

Taken from the series "Through the Mouse Hole," this project follows the story of a young girl who wakes up one day in the world of a small mouse, living behind the skirting boards of the family home. Inspired by Tim Burton's classic Edward Scissorhands, as well as fond memories of Tom and Jerry cartoons from my childhood.

Gavin Smart

I’m a freelance photographer and digital assistant based in Edinburgh, working throughout the UK and beyond.

I originally trained as a classical and jazz musician at London’s Guildhall School of Music, before moving to Paris as an artisan baker, working with leading French boulangerie Eric Kayser. My photographic work is as diverse as my background, bringing together many creative elements in my work. I draw particular inspiration from the art, design and photography that I was exposed to during my time in Paris.

I enjoy working with people from all walks of life, capturing their unique stories with authenticity, sensitivity and creative flair. I am comfortable working in many different photographic situations, with a strong interest in composite production and image manipulation, although environmental portraiture and documentary remain close to my heart.

My work has been widely exhibited, with highlights this year including the Royal Scottish Academy of Art at Edinburgh’s National Gallery, and the Royal Ulster Academy of Art in Belfast. I have won a number of awards in the UK and beyond, highlights of which include the BIPP Student Photographer of the Year 2017, MPA Scottish Student of the Year 2018, and finalist in the 2018 AOP Awards.
