TO THE SEA – A Shutter Hub Editions Publication

© Cliff Spooner

In 2023, we launched TO THE SEA, a year-long exhibition on the French coast celebrating all our visions of the sea. In 2024, we took (RETURN) TO THE SEA to Worthing, and now, for 2025, we’re bringing the theme of TO THE SEA to the page, with a beautiful Shutter Hub Editions publication.

An ode to the ocean, something for the sea.

Submit your work and join us in a book created to celebrate the sea. We want to see creative interpretation of the theme, as broad as it is, and experience all of your visions of the sea – environmental, actual, emotional, and more. Go wherever the tide takes you.

Shutter Hub Editions is the publishing house from Shutter Hub – creating a collection of printed publications for people who love photography. Our publications are held in many international collections including the British Library, the V&A, and the Portuguese Center of Photography.

The book will be available to buy worldwide, with several stockists across the UK.

This call for entries is pay what you can, with a minimum donation of £10. We intend it to be a showcase for the photographers involved. We will promote it heavily across our networks, make it available to purchase in a variety of locations as well as directly from our online shop, and we will create a page on our website to allow people to connect directly with the photographers that are featured in the book as we do with all of our other publications.

In order to make this opportunity as accessible as possible for all photographers, we are offering a number of free image submissions to those with limited income.

If you’d like to be considered, please send us an email before entering your submission, detailing why you should receive a free submission.

100 images will be selected for inclusion in the book. You can enter single images or a short series of images, up to 10 images can be entered per photographer.

The publication will be perfect bound, portrait orientation 140gsm matte paper at 148 x 210mm with a 350gsm cover. The design, layout and editorial decisions will be at our discretion.

Deadline: 13 February 2025 (5pm UK time)

THE BRIEF

An ode to the ocean, something for the sea.

We invite you to submit your work and join us in a book created to celebrate the sea. We want to see creative interpretation of the theme, as broad as it is, and experience all of your visions of the sea – environmental, actual, emotional, and more. Go wherever the tide takes you.

HOW TO ENTER

All submitted files must be named with the photographer’s name and title of work as described in the specifications. Files that are not labelled correctly may not be accepted.

Please read the specification information below.

Deadline for entries: 13 February 2025 (5pm UK time)

Please do not leave your entry until the last minute, we cannot accept any late entries.

FEES & ENTRY

This call for entries is pay what you can, with a minimum donation of £10.

Once you’ve entered there are no further fees to take part – we’ll design, promote and deliver the publication for you.

We’re making this opportunity as affordable as possible for all photographers, but it isn’t cheap to produce and we intend to recoup some of our costs with book sales. We receive no external grants or funding but we’re determined to do what we can to keep photography open to all. Unfortunately, this does mean we won’t be able to pay royalties or supply each entrant with a free copy, but we intend this to be a showcase for photographers and will promote the publication across our networks, making it available to purchase in a variety of locations as well as directly from our online shop, and create a page on our website to allow people to connect directly with the photographers that are featured in the book, as we’ve done with all our previous publications. Having considered many different possibilities and options we feel this is the fairest approach.

In order to make this opportunity as accessible as possible for all photographers, we are offering a number of free image submissions to those with limited income.

If you’d like to be considered, please send us an email before entering your submission, detailing why you should receive a free submission.

10 images can be entered per photographer.

If you’re not a Shutter Hub member but would like to benefit from all the other lovely stuff we offer, you can join here for just £87 per year.
