Janet Lees

I’m an artist and poet, working mainly with photography, film and collage. I love working across different art forms and collaborating with other artists, musicians and performers. My photographic work could be described as a kind of recycling of perception. I’m endlessly fascinated by the marks we make on the world and the poignancy and comedy that arise as they disintegrate. I love walking by the sea and in the mountains. Equally I have a passion for stalking urban hinterlands to find humanity on the street, in cracked walls and rotting signs, in trashed canals, in the cathedral-like spaces of abandoned buildings. This way of seeing also helps me to be in the world without turning away from the devastation that’s all around us.

In summer 2018 I was the visual artist representing the Isle of Man at the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, France. This was followed by a solo show in the island, ‘Evidence of humanity’, in the autumn. At the same time I was lucky enough to have an image selected for ‘Out of the Ordinary’ exhibition at the Bridewell Theatre in London. My film-based works have been selected for international festivals and prizes including the Aesthetica Art Prize and Filmpoem, and my poetry is widely published and anthologised around the world.
