Michael Whelan was announced as the winner of the Shutter Hub PHOTOMASTERS Award 2017, and it’s great to see his winning series Fragments featured in issue 6 of Loupe magazine!
Michael is a photographic artist, who has worked in the industry for 15 years. During this time he has fine-tuned a style that has been described as having tranquility and being gently observed. His landscapes are influenced by scale, topography perspectives and a human interaction. His award winning body of work Fragments tackles the complex relationships that we have with our environment, and how it influences us as humans – by physically deconstructing mountain peaks, bringing to question the spiritual value that we place on them.
PHOTOMASTERS is an exhibition for MA level photographers, who are either currently studying their MA or recently graduated. It is a platform to showcase work to industry professionals, such as art buyers and producers, along with a huge number of visitors. The exhibition is part of the renowned Photoblock event at the Old Truman Brewery in London’s Brick Lane, the exhibitions and events bring in more than 7000 visitors each year. Michael’s work was chosen for the Shutter Hub PHOTOMASTERS Award from the 14 exhibiting international MA students and recent graduates, at last year’s exhibition.

The winner of the 2016 Shutter Hub PHOTOMASTERS Award was Giulia Berto, for her series Fragments, which explores the complex emotions associated with a long-distance relationship. Her work was also featured in Loupe, which is great exposure for photographers at the start of their career.
