Kit Martin
By nature, I am curious. I see beauty in small things, be it the wing of an insect, the texture of a wasps’ nest or the flight of a beetle. I record moments and impressions. I am a photographer, one who enjoys making images as much as taking them, so I work with the camera-less historical processes such as cyanotype, lumens, anthotype and photograms as well as with digital.
I seek out peace. As well as working outdoors, I have been drawn to museums, finding specimens that may not have been seen for a long time. I like to bring them out of hiding and celebrate their form and structure, while wondering at their story. Sharing my enjoyment of these creative processes with other people has led to many collaborations and workshops, always learning.
I try to capture the overlapping contingencies of time and place through photography. This might result in prints being made at the seashore or at a river, using natural elements such as the action of the tide on sea and sand. I love to be outdoors and the sun is central to much of my work, primarily cyanotypes. Lumen prints are made with freshly picked plants and sunlight, while anthotypes are made from a paste of plant and alcohol, taking days or weeks to expose outdoors.
