Shutter Hub member Kim Aldis has been taking photographs, one way or another, for over 50 years. After studying creative photography at the London College of Printing in the 70’s, Kim began his professional career photographing musicians, and was involved in music video production. His main career path has been computer animation and digital VFX for film and TV. After retiring in the 2000s, Kim was was able to renew his interest in photography, with his main focus being portraiture and urban landscapes.
“The Beach Huts of Paignton” is a photographic exploration of the iconic beach huts that line the seafront at Preston Sands, Paignton and the people who use them. The work celebrates the charm and cultural significance of these seaside structures, exploring themes of nostalgia, community, and the enduring appeal of coastal life.
In addition to showcasing the aesthetic appeal of these huts, the project delves into their role in the social fabric of Paignton. More than just seasonal shelters, they are spaces of memory, connection, and continuity—an intersection of nature and human interaction within the coastal environment.
This celebration of place, memory, and the allure of the British seaside aims to preserve a piece of Paignton’s heritage, offering a glimpse into the everyday beauty and simplicity of seaside life.
This is one of those projects that may never really draw to a close, Preston Sands continues to give up endless opportunities for a photographer but I think I’m at a stage where I’d like to put it before a wider audience. A book would be great, as would an exhibition and I’ll be reaching out to magazines and newspapers.
