On 27 June, we arrived at Sainsbury Centre to a warm welcome from the Centre’s Director Jago Cooper, who immersed us in the Centre’s unique history and led us through a maze of art to meet the Centre’s Chief Curator of Art Tania Moore, and Curator of Cultural Empowerment Taf Makwabarara, who guided us on a very special talk and tour of ‘The Camera Never Lies: Challenging Images through The Incite Project’ exhibition.
As part of the Centre’s six-month long investigation into What is Truth?, The Camera Never Lies: Challenging images through The Incite Project is an exhibition re-evaluating the most iconic images of the past 100 years, including images by Don McCullin, Stuart Franklin, Robert Capa and Dorothea Lange, exploring the impact and influence photography has had on shaping – and in some cases distorting – the narrative of major global events.
We also had time to explore the other exhibitions on display as part of their ‘What is Truth?’ programme, which consists of four key, interlinked exhibitions – In Event of Moon Disaster, Liquid Gender, Jeffrey Gibson: no simple word for time and The Camera Never Lies – bringing together some of the world’s leading artists and creative thinkers, plus a new, interlinking publication, and were hosted for a wonderful lunch at the Centre’s The Terrace cafe.
We would like to thank the entire Sainsbury Centre team, and especially Kate Wolstenholme, Sainsbury Centre’s Press Officer (who looked after us excellently all day), for organising such a experience, and to everyone who came to spend the day exploring a world-class art museum with a unique perspective on how art can foster cultural dialogue and exchange.
GET INVOLVED: ‘Your Lens, Your Truth’, our collaborative exhibition with Sainsbury Centre in response to ‘The Camera Never Lies’, is open to entries until 09 September 2024, and we want to see your interpretations of truth through photography.
