CAMERA AMNESTY PROJECTS: VII Academy / Dispatches in Exile – Ukraine

We’ve previously supported the VII Academy with free portfolio reviews for their fellows, and now we are pleased to share that Shutter Hub’s Camera Amnesty Project has provided photographic equipment for Ukrainian photographers taking part in their forthcoming Dispatches in Exile project.

The VII Academy, working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have expanded their Dispatches in Exile project to Ukraine, with the goal of identifying a diverse group of 15-20 Ukrainians who are currently fleeing the war in their homeland. The five instructors from VII Photo Agency will conduct a 5-day workshop covering technical skills, as well as ethics and best practices. Their plan is to establish a group dynamic that will be retained throughout the year through regular online meetings. Recognizing that refugees face unpredictable circumstances, they will encourage participants to attend bi-weekly online meetings that will function as mentoring sessions to review participants’ work and nurture their storytelling skills. Alongside this the VII Foundation plan to explore the making of a documentary film in collaboration with these trainees to bring their unique voices to a larger audience.

Shutter Hub’s Camera Amnesty Projects support the delivery of hands on workshops, exhibitions and print projects, enabling participants to express their ideas and creativity. We work hard to build confidence, develop transferable skills, and empower people to use photography to tell their own stories, creating outcomes that benefit them and the wider community.

Originally set up to connect homeless photographers with the equipment they needed, the project has continued to grow into something much bigger, providing a platform, funds and equipment to those who need it, across the world.

Find out more about the Camera Amnesty and how you can get involved, request photography equipment, or apply for a Camera Amnesty Project Grant– an award of up to £500 to help towards photography projects that focus on matters surrounding humanitarian issues and social injustices.
