“This photo immediately stood out to me for a number of reasons. The smart composition, the contrast in colour and of course the humorous setup! There was something else though – for me this image is a great representation of what life can feel like at the moment. Whether it be trivial and minor or serious and major, there is no doubt that life can very often feel like a struggle. A regular day can very quickly be turned upside down with unpredictable consequence and that’s what this feels like. There’s no doubt that we can all benefit from some levity when life throws us a curveball and I think this serves as a salient reminder to try and look on the bright side in such situations.”

Alamy is the world’s most diverse stock photography collection, they add around 150,000 images to their collection every day from thousands of photographers from across the world. Alamy supply images to customers globally, from magazine and book publishers to design agencies and marketers, they’re always looking for great imagery to enhance their projects.

Alamy work with over 100,000 photographers and aim to make it easy for you to work with them – it’s free to sign up, they don’t edit pictures on content and you retain full ownership of your photos. Since Alamy began, they’ve paid out over $200 million in royalties to photographers and the need for photography in our daily lives shows no signs of slowing.

“I found it very hard to choose one image, but something about Hazel’s really caught my eye. I liked the clean lines and geometry of the quay topped with the chaos of the kids. The closer you look, the more it feels like there are many different stories going on. It’s a great capture of a particular moment!”

Newspaper Club helps everyone print their own newspapers. There’s no minimum order, 24/7 online ordering and fast worldwide delivery.

Since 2010, Newspaper Club has worked with some of the world’s most creative photographers and organisations, including Magnum Photos and the British Journal of Photography. They offer a range of FSC-certified and recycled paper stocks and their printing press is powered by solar energy.

“Yulia’s project was very well researched and, alongside the powerful images, the series brings home the impact of the political and environmental unrest that we are living through.”

Metro Imaging has a reputation for supporting education and in 2005 established its mentorship programme. Over the years the company has supported hundreds of artists from both academic and non-academic pathways.

“We are delighted to be able to partner with Shutter Hub by offering a twelve month bespoke mentorship where we will develop the individual’s next career move. We will cover all aspects of practice to include developing network; marketing and social media; technical and process led discussion as well as contextual and conceptual one to one sessions. There will also be opportunities to interact with others on the scheme and we will produce a working portfolio in support of the mentorship.”

Shutter Hub Editions YEARBOOK Award 2024

One photographer will be selected by Karen Harvey, Founder and Creative Director of Shutter Hub to have the opportunity to work with Shutter Hub Editions to produce and publish a solo book of their work as part of the collectable series.

Winner: Nicola Parry

“Nicola is very gentle with the people she photographs, making them at ease, and therefore more expressive. It’s very much a shared experience between the photographer and the photographed. In this series of portraits of poets Nicola enables the sitter to exist in the moment in their personal space, or to express whatever it is they are holding inside – their words, through her image. I think this could make a very special book, for everyone.”

Founded in 2021, Shutter Hub Editions is the publishing house from Shutter Hub, creating a collection of themed printed publications for people who love photography. Their books are stocked in bookshops around the UK, and held in collections at the British Library, Cambridge University Library, Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Libraries of Wales and Scotland, and more.

YEARBOOK is Shutter Hub’s annual directory of photographers, open to all photographers, whatever stage they are at in their career. Now in its fourth year, we received nearly 1000 images and we are showing at least one image from everyone who entered in this exhibition.

YEARBOOK is a group show, promoting the skill and talent of photographers working now. If you are an editor, director, curator or someone who commissions, promotes or supports photographers we invite you to explore the gallery and the huge range of styles and subjects from photographers across the world.

YEARBOOK 2024

08 August – 31 October 2024

The YEARBOOK exhibition will run for the above dates, but the directory will be accessible online permanently.
