YELLOW photobook cover with image of ballpit filled with yellow plastic balls, and a hand reaches into the pit.

When we say ‘think of the colour yellow’, what comes up for you? Our latest photobook, THE COLOUR LIBRARY: YELLOW, is bursting with inspiration, from delicate blossoms and ripe lemons to eye-catching clothing and sunny décor.

Across 100 photos, our photographers celebrate all things yellow: some chanced upon in the street or in nature, others meticulously planned. Of course, there are loads of different hues that count as yellow, from acidic brights to mustard, egg yolk, and canary. You’ll find them all in the book!

The cover image, by Jo Martindale, submerges us in a ball pit of yellow plastic balls: it’s immersive, fun, and hard to look away. The yellow we find around us definitely has multiple meanings and purposes; in colour theory, it’s is seen as attention-grabbing and energetic, but also warm and friendly.

Highlights from the new photobook

Flicking through the pages, you’ll see industrial yellow metalwork and brickwork, flashes of colour in domestic scenes, the varying yellow tones of light throughout the day (some even becoming surreal), patterns from nature and products in close-up, and some very creative portrait shoots.

Submitting entries from across the world – Canada, China, Finland, Germany, the UK and beyond – our photographers sent innovative work that really made us think, and we hope the photobook gives you the chance to pause and see the world a little differently.

We are always looking for creative and alternative processes alongside traditional photography practices. In this photobook, you’ll find artwork by Gayle Hallowell, Quinn Miller and Linda Chapman, all using experimental methods to achieve spectacular results.

THE COLOUR LIBRARY: YELLOW is the second in our Colour Library series (it all started with Blue!), where we challenge photographers to interpret the theme in their own way. It might be a striking pop of colour that draws the eye, or a saturated shade that covers the whole composition.
