Right now, it’s more important than ever to celebrate the natural world and preserve the biodiversity and habitats around us. Enter FLORA: our latest photobook, which celebrates growth, resilience and organic beauty in flowers, trees and plant life.
In 100 images, photographers around the world share what they see, from much-loved gardens and atmospheric woodland to eye-catching blossom, daffodils, cacti, and a glimpse of cowslips and gorse in hedgerows. It’s not just about the countryside – urban nature shots are also in the mix.
If you feel more relaxed after looking at floral images, you’re not alone. A Japanese scientific study, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology (2020), found that viewing a flower image could distract from stress, and decrease blood pressure and cortisol.
While being out in nature has plenty of wellbeing benefits, it’s reassuring to know that anyone who can’t get outdoors regularly (maybe due to health issues, work patterns, or other barriers) can still be uplifted just by seeing the floral world from wherever they are.
Highlights from FLORA
FLORA is full of variety, and there’s something to suit every kind of photography lover. Look out for cyanotypes, those recognisably deep blue images made from a centuries-old process to capture plant life using sunlight; there are a host of other analogue images, too.
Look out for an exciting collaboration between photographer and artist Eric Zeigler and ecologist Aaron Ellison. We also have still life shots, either from carefully assembled foliage, or (as our cover image, by Steve Pill, shows) a simple bouquet abandoned on the street.
It’s time to bloom – after all, even a weed is just a plant growing in the ‘wrong’ place…
