Description: The High Streets Heritage Action Zones (HAZ) Programme is a nationwide scheme designed to secure lasting improvements to our historic high streets for the communities who use them. It is Government funded and run by Historic England.
The Cultural Programme, co-funded with The National Lottery Heritage Fund and supported by Arts Council England, has the goal of making the high street a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for people to live, work and spend time. Through the Cultural Programme, support and funding will be made available in a Local Grants Programme for the development and production of cultural programmes, managed by Cultural Consortia on each High Street participating in the scheme.(https://historicengland.org.uk/services-skills/heritage-action-zones/regenerating-historic-high-streets/).
Alongside local projects, Historic England is curating a National Commissioning Programme that will engage with artists and creatives to help bring a very special and diverse set of places together. This photographic commission is one of two flagship commissions within the National Commissioning Programme that run across the HAZ Programme from 2020 to 2024, alongside an outdoor arts commission.
Historic England wishes to commission a creative photographic response to England’s high streets as part of the High Street HAZ Cultural Programme 2020-24. Photographers will work in a number of High Street HAZs to co-create a series that will build a contemporary portrait of England’s high streets and the communities who use them. This flagship commission will respond to the HAZ Programme as it evolves and a set of photographs produced for the commission will enter into the Historic England Archive, the nation’s archive for records of England’s historic buildings, archaeology and social history. The commissioned photographs will complement the images made by Historic England’s in-house photography team who will record the architecture and status of all of the High Street HAZs throughout the project.
