Course: Out from the Darkcloth – Intro to Large Format Photography

Share

Tutor: Brittonie Fletcher

This course will introduce you to the large format 5×4 view camera using our range of Intrepid MK3 cameras. Large format simply refers to film size; the negatives produced are 5x4inches, which lends itself to unrivalled image detail and quality. Hiding under a dark cloth to focus the image on the glass viewfinder, large format photography encourages us to slow down and carefully consider our image making decisions and choices. By the end of the weekend, you will have an understanding of loading and using a view camera, and using the darkroom to process and print from large format negatives.

Day 1
Morning: we will explore the different parts of the large format camera and how they work, differences in shutters and lens lengths, loading dark slides and discuss film notch code. We will also look at some examples of negatives, contacts, prints, and discuss resolution and enlargement.

Afternoon: we will learn how to load 5×4 film using dark slides and how to set up for our first exposures. Then we move outside to shoot paper negatives, followed by black and white film.

Day 2
Morning: today will be spent in the darkroom. Here we will learn about film development and different ways to process our exposed film and paper negatives shot the day before.

Afternoon: producing contact prints in the darkroom for each of our negatives, discussing how to adjust exposure and any other troubleshooting.
