Professional development is essential to us at Shutter Hub and we want to enable our members to learn from experts in their field. Following the hugely successful Professional Development Day at Bermondsey Project Space in 2019 we are now delivering an accessible Professional Development Series online and we’d like you to join us!

The sessions are for all photographers who want to take their profession further and learn in a friendly environment, whatever level you are currently at. We want you to come away having learnt something that will benefit you in your career, help you feel inspired and empowered.

Each session is one hour long and we’ll vary the days and times they are held to allow people with different schedules more chance to attend. There is one speaker per session and the sessions aren’t recorded so you will have to attend to hear the talk and ask questions – we want this to be as similar as possible to attending one of our actual events, the most benefit is gained from being present, and we feel this leads to more open and honest discussion. The sessions are free but donations are welcome.

On 23 September 2021 we are pleased to welcome Jessica Burko, Artist, Arts Marketer and Program Manager and Curator at the Photographic Resource Center, to speak with us.

TALK: Marketing Yourself as an Artist, with Jessica Burko

Jessica Burko will speak about how she came to work as a curator and an Arts Marketer while maintaining a career as a visual artist. She will share with us the evolution of her professional arts work through a circuitous path, beginning as a photographer, working with photojournalists, a magazine photo editor, in artist studios, in a photo stock agency, doing small freelance photo jobs, and as a stringer for the Associated Press. All of which gave her new insight into the art world and photography industry. It was in graduate school for fine art photography when she first began working in galleries and saw first hand how little artists know about the business side of the arts and led Jessica to begin working with artists on marketing strategies to get their work seen and sold.

Jessica Burko has been an exhibiting artist since 1985 and has shown her work in exhibitions throughout the United States including a 2018 solo exhibition at ArtProv Gallery, Providence, RI, group show Exposure 2019 at the Photographic Resource Center, and a 2020 solo exhibition at the Shelter In Place Gallery, Boston, MA. Her work has been reviewed in the Boston Globe, Art New England, and Artscope Magazine.

In addition to being a practicing artist, Burko is the Program Manager and Curator at the Photographic Resource Center, Cambridge, MA and is an independent curator with more than thirty exhibitions produced since 2000. Burko’s work in the arts community allows her to support artists in achieving their creative and professional goals through portfolio reviews, lectures, workshops, and partnerships with organizations such as Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, ArtsWorcester, Worcester, MA, and Mass MoCA’s Assets for Artists Program, North Adams, MA.
