SHUTTER HUB OPEN 2018: Private View & Exhibition – Amsterdam Edition

The Shutter Hub OPEN 2018 made its debut in October at the Old Truman Brewery as part of Photomonth London. It was so wonderful, like, really wonderful, that word spread and we were invited to take the show to Amsterdam for its encore.

Amsterdam’s 5&33 Gallery is an excellent space, renowned for its dynamic cultural programme and situated in a prime location (directly opposite the Central Station).

Filling such a huge space with over 200 full tabloid sized newspaper prints wasn’t so difficult (just time consuming) but, being in a new country, with a new audience, well that was a challenge we needed to work twice as hard to address.

On Thursday 07 December we opened the Shutter Hub OPEN 2018 in Amsterdam, guests began to trickle in, and although the space could have only looked full with a thousand people (no joke!) it was busy, it was social. People made their way from UK, The Netherlands, Brussels, and Rome. Guests came from agencies, from Dutch tourism organisations, photographers and publishers, people with a genuine interest, and then something happened – we got offered another exhibition in The Netherlands!

A few people who’d seen the OPEN in London commented how different the exhibition looked in this new space, and how they’d seen images they’d not noticed at the Old Truman Brewery. It was exciting to hear this, as although we’re pretty organic when it comes to curating, we had paid specific attention to mixing it up and juxtaposing different images.

Again, the comments about the variety, the democracy, the quality of photography, the format, all came, gratefully received.
